This programmable, intelligent brick serves as the heart and brain of LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 robots. It features an illuminated six-button interface that changes color to indicate the brick’s active state, a high-resolution black and white display, built-in speaker, USB port, a mini SD card reader, four input ports and four output ports. The brick also supports USB, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi communication with a computer and has a programming interface that enables programming and data logging directly onto the brick. It is compatible with mobile devices and is powered by AA batteries or the EV3 Rechargeable DC Battery

Port View

LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick has Port View function, with which it displays values measured by sensors.

Following pictures show EV3 Brick displaying a value measured by Touch Sensor.

Mortor Control

With buttons on LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick, you can spin motors connected to EV3 Brick.
With up and down, right and left buttons, you can control each motor roll forward or backward. There are 2 ports combinations, “A and D” and “B and C.”

Followings show EV3 Large Motor connecting to B and C ports.
Left button controls left motor connected to C port, and down button controls tight motor connected to B port.

IR Control

LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick has “IR CONTROL” application that can control motor remotely and directly with infrared command.

1 Infrared Beacon can control 2 motors. 1 Infrared Beacon can control the pair of A and D ports, or B and C ports. The available pairs of channels are 1 and 2, or 3 and 4.

For the use of it, start LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick, change the menu image as APP tab, and select “IR CONTROL.”

After select the menu, application is executed and become waiting for infrared ray. Then push Infrared Beacon button and motor rotates in proportion to the pushing time.

By the channel change button of Infrared Beacon, output port answering to button control changes.

  • It takes 20 to 30 seconds because LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick operates Linux as the OS in ARM.
  • No sleep mode is available.

Firmware

There is no compatibility between LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 and LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT.
For the use of LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3, you need to download EV3 firmware.
You cannot download firmware for LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT.
And you cannot download EV3 firmware for the use of LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT.

Definition improved from 100x64pixels to 178x128pixels. There is no back light.

Micro SD card slot

You cannot refer to the contents in SD card as a drive directly from Windows or Mac unlike in case with memory card commercially available. With EV3 Software, you can refer to EV3 Software Project saved in SD card.

Utilizing sensors by HiTechnic

Though sensors by HiTechnic are applicable for EV3, some of those do not support automatic ID system. Because there is no commanding brock by HiTechnic in EV3 Software for now, please use a programming brock “Row Sensor Value” with which you can get a value by a sensor itself. You can also get values measured by HiTechnic sensors with Port View in EV3 Intelligent Brick.

Examine the values measured by NXT sensors connecting to EV3

LEGO MINDSTORMS Education NXT sensors are applicable for LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3.
You can examine the value with Port View by connecting sensors to LEGO MINDSTORMS Education LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick.

Back light of the control button

You can turn on back light in three colors by programming with LEGO Mindstorms Education EV3 Software. Visualizing status of the robots helps you find out programming problems and it increases expressive power of the robot.

The way to refer to contents in SD card when it connects to PC via USB.

You can refer or operate the project in micro SD card with Memory Browser function in EV3 when connecting LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick with micro SD card to PC.
  1. Preparation  Please insert SD card into LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick and connect to PC via USB. Startup LEGO Mindstorms Education EV3 Software in advance.
  2. Open a project Open a project (or you can make a new vacant project.)
  3. Open the Memory Browser window. Select “Memory Browser” within “Tools.” You can refer to micro SD card by selecting “SD Card” tab.

The way to send projects in LEGO MINDSTORMS Education LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick to SD card

Following is the way to send (or copy) projects in LEGO MINDSTORMS Education LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick to SD card.
  1. Insert micro SD card into LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick.

  2. Select the project you want to copy and open it pushing the center button. In the picture below, “Gyro Boy” project is selected.

  3. Push the center button again with the project turning over.

  4. A dialog shows up to select copying the project into micro SD card or deleting.

  5. Select the left icon to save the project into micro SD card, and push the center button. A dialog shows up to confirm to save into micro SD card. Please select the check icon.

  6. If there is another project that has same name in SD card, the following dialog shows up. Select the left cancel icon if you don’t want to copy, or select the right check icon if overwriting is ok.

The project has been copied from LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick into micro SD card. You can refer to data in micro SD card by selecting “SD Card.”

The way to do On-Brick Programming

  1. Select “Brick Program” in App ta.

  2. A screen for On-Brick Programming shows up. Select the place to put the programming brock in by operating buttons on LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick. An arrow pointing up will appear if you select correctly.

  3. A table shows up after you push Up Button on LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick. Please select the programming brock you want to insert.
    *There are lots of programing brocks. You can select one by scrolling upward.

  4. Selected programming brock is inserted into the screen for On-Brick Program.

  5. In the same way, please inset other programing brocks.

  6. For some programming brock, you can change parameters. You can change parameter by the up and down button after selecting a programing brock and push the center button.

  7. After program is completed, you can practice the program by pushing the left button on LEGO MINDSTORMS Education EV3 Intelligent Brick to select start brock, and push the center button.

The way to do On-Brick Data Logging

Following is the explanation for On-Brick Data Logging with the example of Color Sensor.
  1. Preparation Connect EV3 Color Sensor to port 3.

  2. Start logging Select “Brick Datalog” and prepare for logging.

  3. Set up logging Select the icon in the lower right spanner icon to change the measurement mode of the sensor or to change the sampling rate.

    You can select within 1 sample / minute, 0.1 sample / second, 1 sample / second, 10 samples / second, 100 samples / second, and 1,000 samples/ second.
  4. Logging You can start saving the value measured by sensor by selecting red round icon next to spanner icon.

    When the sampling rate is 1,000 samples / second, the graph in the screen isn’t plotted but data has been saved.
  5. Save A dialog shows up that set the file name after finish of logging by pushing the center button.

    The saved logging data is saved into “BrkDL_SAVE.”
